Before Portugal sailed the world, the Phoenicians sailed to Portugal.
Portugal is remembered as a nation of navigators — but it was navigated to first. Nearly three thousand years ago, the Phoenicians, the great seafaring traders of the Lebanese coast, followed the Atlantic tin routes to the shores of what is now Portugal. Their merchant outposts have been excavated at Tavira in the Algarve, at Santa Olaia on the Mondego, and along the Tagus at Lisbon itself — the earliest trace of the Levant on the Portuguese coast.
It is a fitting ancestry. The Phoenicians were the ancient world's boldest merchants and sailors; Portugal, two millennia later, became the nation that opened the oceans. Two maritime, mercantile peoples, separated by the length of the Mediterranean and by centuries — and yet cut from the same cloth. The tie between Lebanon and Portugal is not one of conquest, but of kinship: a shared instinct for the sea, for trade, and for finding a footing far from home.

Lebanese interest in Portugal arrives in several forms, and each is handled differently.
