There is evidence of human presence in the Arabian Peninsula dating to 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. The First Saudi State, Diriyah was established on February 22nd, 1727 by Muhammad bin Saud. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud proclaimed February 22nd as Founding Day, an important National Celebration.

In 1932,  King Abdulaziz Al-Saud united and founded the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. September 23rd is the Saudi National day.
Portugal and Saudi Arabia’s first known interactions date back to the 16th century when the Portuguese tried to conquer Jeddah, the so-called Siege of Jeddah in 1517.

The Portuguese didn’t achieve their goal, and some historians believe the origins of the Christian Cemetery of Jeddah are related to that battle.

Today Saudi Arabia is a key destiny of Portuguese exports and the two countries have a positive and cooperative relation, upholding often meetings to boost economic ties between one another.

The Tarout Island, is known as one of the first inhabited lands in the Arabian Peninsula, close to the of Al-Qatif, in the Persian Gulf, was colonized by the Portuguese.  Some sources mention the origin of Tarout Castle dates back to 5000 years ago and in the 16th century, there was Portuguese intervention in it, having become part of the Portuguese defense strategy in the Gulf. Today is a tourist attraction. Interestingly, is locally known as “Castelo”, which is the Portuguese word for Castle.

The history of Tarout Island proves that Saudi Arabia is a key strategic location since the earliest times of international trade.
